Bart's Bash

Payne Hicks Beach was the primary sponsor of Bart's Bash, an event held on Sunday 21 September 2014 whereby thousands of people from around the world participated in sailing races by which they sought to set a new Guinness World Record.

Bart's Bash was run by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, a charity set up in memory of the Olympic Gold and Silver medallist, Andrew "Bart" Simpson who was tragically killed in a training accident in May 2013.

There were well in excess of 18,000 participants competing in the event from more than 700 sailing clubs in no less 68 different countries. In no other sport has there ever been such support for a loss of a member of that sporting community and, thus far, the event has raised more than £200,000.

The funds will support the development and delivery of the charitable aims, both nationally and internationally. Pilot programmes are being tested to enhance sailing activities and to encourage participation in the sport on a worldwide basis. The aim is to provide education through sailing and that it will lead, by example, to finding apprenticeships in marine related industries and even perhaps a Gold medallist.

Richard Butcher of Payne Hicks Beach is Chairman of the Trustees. His Co-Trustees include Sir Ben Ainslie CBE and Mr Iain Percy OBE.
