Ian qualified as a solicitor in 1980. He was previously with Herbert Oppenheimer Nathan & VanDyke and joined Payne Hicks Beach in 1987 as a partner. He is head of the Family department.

Ian specialises in all aspects of family law. He acted for Mrs White in the landmark House of Lords case in 2000 and sits as a Deputy District Judge in the Principal Registry of the Family Division.
