London Marathon 2014: Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust

On Sunday 13 April 2014, trainee solicitor, Joshua Moger ran the London Marathon on behalf of one of the firm's national charities, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust. Having previously completed half marathons including the Great North Run, this was Josh's first attempt at the marathon and to date he has raised the fantastic sum of £2,576.25.  Our thanks and congratulations to Josh.

Josh's association with the EMCT has come entirely from an event held by the EMCT at Payne Hicks Beach, where he met and listened to speeches from children and families helped by the Trust. The EMCT aims to provide support to the ten children and young people diagnosed with cancer and leukemia every day in the UK.  It recognises that, more than just the physical effects that years of treatment has, cancer affects a sufferer's childhood - being out of school, living life in a hospital room, away from friends and physically separated from family.

The EMCT takes groups of children and young people sailing - they are all aged between the ages of 8 and 24 and are in recovery from cancer, leukemia and other serious illnesses. The sailing provides a bridge between a life being immersed in illness, and a new enthusiasm for the future. Arriving fragile, with the cancer having damaged their confidence, they have the opportunity to spend time with a group of youngsters who have experienced the same traumas and fears as them. They spend the week away in groups and help do everything from steer the yachts, to washing up. But most of all this time away allows them to put everything they've been through to one side - and simply have an adventure.

Last year the EMCT announced ambitious plans to double the amount of young people in recovery from cancer that they work with from 6% in 2013 to 14.2% by 2016.  Inevitably such expansion requires supporters and money, and all donations received will help make this ambitious plan a reality.
