Payne Hicks Beach announces Partner and Associate promotions

Leading London law firm, Payne Hicks Beach, is pleased to announce six internal promotions across the firm’s Dispute Resolution, Corporate, Private Client and Family departments. Ane Vernon and Howard Taylor have been welcomed into the partnership – within the Dispute Resolution and Corporate departments respectively – and Emily Hewlett, Melissa Ellis, Tom Quinn and Joshua Moger have been made Associates. The promotions are effective from 1 June 2019.

Ane Vernon – having qualified at Payne Hicks Beach in 2003 – has a wealth of experience across a variety of matters including contentious trusts and probate, commercial and contract disputes as well as public law. Notably, Ane has vast expertise in disputes arising in the education sphere and successfully represented the Governors of The London Oratory School in their high profile Judicial Review claim against the Schools Adjudicator with regard to the school’s admission arrangements. Furthermore, Ane continues to be recommended in one of the premier legal directories, The Legal 500 UK, and holds a current ranking in The Legal 500 UK 2019 edition where she is noted as “a meticulous lawyer who will really fight her client’s corner”.

Howard Taylor has been made up to Partner having joined the firm’s Corporate department in 2016. With over 20 years’ experience, Howard has extensive expertise in all aspects of corporate law – ranging from private equity transactions and joint ventures to the sale and purchase of businesses. Howard’s practice spans a number of sectors including technology, manufacturing and financial services. Reflecting his expertise in the field, Howard has been recommended in The Legal 500 UK for many years and features in the current 2019 edition.

Howard Taylor, Partner at Payne Hicks Beach, says:

In addition, the Corporate department will be further bolstered by the appointment of Elias Choueifati as an Assistant Solicitor. Elias joins from specialist boutique firm, Jirehouse. During this time Elias has established expertise across a broad range of corporate matters including M&A, capital finance and venture capital. Elias will work closely with the wider team to continue to provide the clear and pragmatic advice for which the department is known.

Within the Private Client department, Emily Hewlett and Melissa Ellis have been made Associates. Emily, having been at the firm for over ten years, has substantial experience in advising both domestic and international high net worth clients on a breadth of trust, succession and estate planning matters. Melissa has been with the firm since 2015 and provides clients – based in the UK and abroad – with comprehensive advice on a wealth of private client matters including estate and succession planning concerns and domicile matters.   

The firm’s prominent Family department has been further strengthened by the promotions of Tom Quinn and Joshua Moger to Associate level. Tom joined Payne Hicks Beach in 2011 and has built his practice advising on all family law matters, including divorce, civil partnership and co-habitation agreements, in addition to, to private children matters. Joshua trained with the firm and qualified into the Family department. Joshua is instructed by high net worth individuals on a range of matters – from the financial consequences of a relationship breakdown and Child Arrangement Orders to leave to remove applications. Joshua often advises on disputes with complex financial and international components.

These appointments follow the recent announcement of the creation of a Management Board following the retirement of Alastair Murdie as Senior Partner on 31 May.  The Management Board will consist of Robert Brodrick (Chair), Dominic Crossley (Head of Dispute Resolution) and Jonathan Gatward (Head of Corporate).  They will work alongside Virginia Farquharson who is continuing as the firm’s Director of Management.
