Payne Hicks Beach offices in New Square star in Downton Abbey
The stars of the period drama Downton Abbey decended on New Square for filming of the much-loved television series of Julian Fellowes’ Crawley family. In particular, Lady Edith Crawley, played by Laura Carmichael from the hit drama, took centre stage as she was spotted filming in New Square. Carmichael and the cast all showed up in their finest costumes for the scenes. Vintage cars were also seen on the set near Payne Hicks Beach to give an authentic feel as the stellar cast wore their period finery.
The period settings of New Square, including its varied architecture, beautiful gardens, spacious squares, historic halls and panelled rooms, lend so well to creating a late 1920s scene. Some of the entrances of Payne Hicks Beach’s offices and also the premises of Wildy & Sons are expected to feature in forthcoming episodes for ITV’s award-winning series.
The top-secret filming in New Square took place in April 2015 and proved to be a fitting backdrop for the ITV drama that follows the lives of Lord Grantham’s family and their servants.
