Alastair Murdie

Senior Partner & Head of Private Client

Alastair specialises in a huge range of private client work involving major estates and probates and family businesses of all kinds and across the whole of the UK. These can be investment groups or trading groups, companies or partnerships.

Alastair advises on all aspects of estate planning and taxation matters and offshore trusts. Some of the work relates to tax structures with a matrimonial context and he works closely with the family department on such matters. He also deals with taxation planning and structuring for agricultural landed estates and other property transactions.

Alastair was formerly, and for many years, a senior lecturer at the College of Law and this legal knowledge combined with long and successful private client practice gives him a significant reputation as an exceptional legal practitioner with long experience and trusted judgement.

Chambers & Partners UK writes that Alastair "gives pragmatic advice and is very decisive". Alastair is recognised in The Legal 500 UK for leading the teams for Agriculture & Estates, Art & Cultural Property and Private Client and writes that the teams provide "an excellent level of service, with targeted advice and in-depth knowledge of the sectors". In particular, The Legal 500 recognises that Alastair regularly advises landed estates on art issues, and recently assisted in the negotiations of a substantial loan to a European museum.

Alastair has for many years featured in the Citywealth Leaders List and is listed in the current 2016 edition in the Top 20 Leading Lawyers List and also as a Leading Landed Estates and Property Lawyer.

Alastair became Head of Private Client in 2009 and Senior Partner at the firm in 2011.
