Dept of Education guidance on ban of mobile phones in schools

Ane Vernon, Partner and Education Law specialist at Payne Hicks Beach, explores the Department for Education’s new guidance on children’s use of mobile phones at school in an article published in the Teaching Times.

“The new guidance is issued on the back of studies and reports concerning the use of phones and social media by children and a concern that mobile phones in schools are a distraction and cause disruption to a positive learning environment”.  She comments that the DfE is ‘determined’ that all schools should prohibit the use of mobile phones during the school day including breaks and lunchtimes, but the guidance leaves each school to implement its own policy.
