Officials said in new documents that incoming protections for pregnant women could have “unintended consequences” by scaring off bosses. James Townsend said: “Proposed changes may backfire if firms see hiring certain women as either a legal or financial risk. Protections are important, but if maternity protections become too onerous, some employers will inevitably quietly step back at the recruitment stage.”
