Workers’ rights overhaul risks fewer jobs for women – James Townsend for The Telegraph

James Townsend, Partner and Head of Employment at Payne Hicks Beach, had his comments included in a piece in The Telegraph looking at how government plans to overhaul workers’ rights, might adversely affect the hiring of women in the workplace.  

Officials said in new documents that incoming protections for pregnant women could have “unintended consequences” by scaring off bosses.  James Townsend said: “Proposed changes may backfire if firms see hiring certain women as either a legal or financial risk.  Protections are important, but if maternity protections become too onerous, some employers will inevitably quietly step back at the recruitment stage.”
