James commented that the proposed enhancement to SSP entitlement under the Employment Rights Bill “may sound compassionate, but it will undoubtedly have the effect of increasing casual absences from work. By trying to fix what isn’t broken, this reform may well drive up ad hoc absences in the workplace, particularly for conditions such as minor mental health ailments, with the inevitable effect of increasing strains on both employers and co-workers of absent employees.”
