Education expert Ane Vernon, Partner in our Dispute Resolution Team, wrote in Schools Week magazine about new DfE guidance urging schools to limit suspensions to the most serious behaviour, encourage structured internal suspensions, and preserve headteacher autonomy, warning that this approach could increase the use of seclusion rooms and raise safeguarding and human-rights concerns.

Ane Vernon, partner at law firm Payne Hicks Beach said while it is a “good idea in principle” she is “concerned that in practice we will see an increased use of pupils being placed in seclusion rooms – a practice which raises its own safeguarding and human-rights concerns”.
