Paul is a partner in the Dispute Resolution department. He specialises in commercial litigation, regulatory investigations, fraud, and financial crime. He has substantial experience in disputes related to the financial services sector, having acted for banks (investment, retail and commercial), asset managers, funds platforms, and other industry participants in litigation in the UK, the Middle East, Hong Kong and the broader Asia Pacific region. During his career Paul has also been seconded at a senior level to leading international banks and asset managers in London, Hong Kong, and New Zealand.  Examples of his experience include:

  • defending a leading fintech company against claims by UK-based consumers whose funds were allegedly fraudulently transferred to bank accounts in Asia
  • urgent injunctive relief arising out of a multi-jurisdictional fraud and a related financial crime investigation
  • insider dealing investigations for a leading financial institution
  • litigation arising out of complex autocall structured products
  • litigation between several international financial institutions over the correct interpretation of Loan Market Association documentation in the context of distressed debt trading
  • litigation related to execution-only investments made through a funds investment platform
  • prejudiced shareholder litigation in the BVI and Hong Kong

Paul joined Payne Hicks Beach as a partner in September 2021 from Simmons & Simmons where he worked in its London and Hong Kong litigation teams from 2011 to 2021. Paul is admitted as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand (2006), as a solicitor in Hong Kong (2017), and as a registered foreign lawyer in England & Wales.
